Rick Wyckoff's Journey to Reach his Goals!

Hi all! Mike asked me to share my story. I've pretty much always been overweight. In the second grade I just kinda ballooned, as my mom puts it. She would have to buy me new clothes every payday. My teacher even called them askin them what was goin on. Not really sure what happened. It wasn't that I stopped being active. I played soccer and ran track through elementary. But by the fifth grade and all through junior high, high school and college, I just got more and more sedentary. I graduated high school at about 280 pounds. And by the time I graduated college I think I was around 330.

After college I moved to West Texas with my folks, got my own place and job and got my life goin. Some life though heh. My average day consisted of goin to work, coming home, ordering a pizza and pop, playing video games and goin to bed. Needless to say, I continued to grow. I finally got sick of West Texas, my folks had moved and was pretty much all alone there.

I decided I'd do something crazy and adventurous, so I made arrangements to move to Alaska. I came up here at the tail end of summer and completely fell in love with the mountains, northern lights, wildlife... just love it up here. Winter came soon though and I ended up pretty much hibernating. The people at work were talking about all this stuff to do.... hiking, biking, fishing, mountain climbing, mountain biking, ice climbing, skiing, snow machining, etc etc etc... Needless to say, you have to be fit to pretty much do any of that. That kinda got my fire goin to change things around.

The event that really hit me hard though was my brother's wedding. In Feb '05, I had to get sized for a tux. My bro had asked me to be his best man. It was such an embarrassing experience. The guy at the store had to look long and hard for a tux that would fit me. I don't exactly remember the size he recommended, but I do remember that it was "Portly." Ugh! When did I get fat enough to be considered "Portly?" So I headed to my brother's wedding in March of '05. I got on a plane to head home and low and behold, my seat belt wouldn't fit.... Huh? I thought. Oh crap, what am I gonna do? I told the flight attendant and she gave me an extendor. Man, guess I was larger than I thought I was. It was SO embarrassing having to ask for one of those on every flight there and back. Then, I saw the pics. Oh my God! I was twice the size of the groom, my bro. I couldn't believe it.

When I got home from the wedding I started to examine my life. I bought scales to see how big I was. Bought the digital ones that went up to 340. Surely I wasn't weighing more than that. I hopped on and a big 'E' came up... Apparently I was more than 340. So I started by just walking. Every night, as far as I could, which wasn't far. I then bought some workout videos and in May '05 I officially began my transformation. I read all I could about nutrition and exercise. Applied what I could. I had many ups and downs. And in Dec of '05, I finally bought some other scales. They were dial, so went up a little higher than 340. I was around 347 then. I went home for the holidays and had a ton of compliments about how much better I looked. To this day, I still have no idea how much I weighed at my heaviest.

In June or July of '06, I found BFFM and came across Mike's website. Actually a friend I met online showed me Mike website. It really got me all pumped up and took me awhile, but i finally sent Mike an email congratulating him on his accomplishments and told him my story. Since then, he's been an awesome source of inspiration, encouragement and instruction for me. I've climbed the hike trail at Exit Glacier... which is an 8 mile hike with a 3000 foot climb. Gotten into biking. I'm down about 40 pounds since I met him. I'm at 304 now. 300 is just around the corner! Can't wait till I'm no longer a 300-pounder! Still have a ways to go, but I'm progressing everyday. My ultimate goals are to lose fat and gain muscle. I'd like to be a slim trim 210 pounds. And I want to start dating and meet the woman of my dreams and start a family. It wasn't till I got mad and furious with myself that I had gotten up to nearly 400 pounds that I started to change things around. I was so upset I couldn't do the things everyone else at work was doin. Those are the things that keep me goin.
